Tips for Healthy Children

Here is some information on how you can develop healthy habits and support for you to make more healthy choices for your child.

Healthy Eating

Eating habits and patterns are formed in the first few years of life so it’s important for children to be introduced to healthy foods as young as possible. However, at any age, what we eat affects our health. We can signpost you to support that is available to families in RCT to help you and your child eat more healthily.

Henry has a great video explaining how you can encourage healthy eating from breastfeeding and beyond.

Healthy family recipes ideas for breakfast, snacks, main meals, desserts and packed lunches are available on the Henry website.  Recipe ideas for all the family as well as food swaps ideas, shopping lists and information on how you can involve your child in mealtimes is also available on the Every Child Wales website.

Affordable food

If you are more than 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under 4, you may be eligible to get help to buy healthy food and milk. Visit the Healthy Start Website for more information.

If you cannot afford the essentials you may be able to access a food bank. Check if there is a local food bank in your area.

Healthy Teeth

Like eating habits, a good oral routine is formed in the first few years of life.  A toothbrushing routine should be put in place as soon as your child has their first tooth.  This will make it less likely that they will form bad habits and can help their general health.
