Being home educated is when you are statutory school age but don’t go to a school. Instead you are taught elsewhere, usually at home by your parents or carers or a tutor.
You are statutory school age from the term after your 5th birthday to the end of the school year following your 16th birthday (Year 1 to Year 11).
Your parent or carer will be responsible for your education and can get help from Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council who can provide you details of support groups in your area amongst other support. If you are in a special school, your parent or carer will have to ask the local authority permission for you to be educated at home.
RCT has an elective home education policy that can give you more information.
If you are worried about being home schooled, you should talk to a teacher if you are still in school, family member or friend that you trust. Talking can make you feel better and they may be able to help you. This may be difficult so you may find it easier to write it in a letter. It's always good to plan what you want to say first and think about what you would like to happen next. For example:
- What is wrong
- How it makes you feel
- How long it has been happening / you have been feeling this way
- How you would like them to help you
- What you would like to happen
